Blog Post 2

This week in EDM110 our assignment was to watch a variety of videos. Mr.Dancealot was the first video I watched. During this short film I observed a teacher attempting to teach the students dance. The teacher is trying to teach the class dance movements while standing behind a counter top using a slide show presentation; all while the students are seated. I believe the central message of this clip is directed to wards teachers. All educators need to interact with their students and keep the classroom a fun and educational place to be. By watching this video and seeing how poorly the students do on their aspect it is clear that Mr.Dancealot is portraying poor teaching skills. I enjoyed watching this clip because it gave me a chance to learn and grow as a teacher!

The second we were assigned to watch was teaching in the 21st century. Robert feels that teaching is not about entertaining students but teaching them skills that will carry into the future. Although technology is always changing and educators need to learn to evolve with it so that we will be properly informed to teach our students. Honestly I do not like the way Robert sees teaching changing because technology isn’t my strong suit. But, if Robert is correct as a future teacher I will have to learn to evolve!

The third video I watched was The Networked Student. The main question in this clip is “Why dose the network student need a teacher?”. After viewing this clip and watching the student learn so much through the use of the Internet it was truly amazing. But, student still need human interaction. Teachers need to be there for their students to help guide them and be there for them.

The forth video I watched was harness your students digital Harness your student’s digital smarts. I believe the thesis of this clip is that not all students learn in the same ways. All students are different and special individuals. My reaction to this clip was extremely positive. I loved the message in this video and I believe all future educators should watch it!

The fifth video I watched was who’s ahead in the learning race. I believe that the elementary students are the ones winning the race. These young children almost mastered the mac book pro in as little as two days. The way they used the technology to its fullest verse the college students was extremely eye opening.

The sixth video I viewed was flipping the classroom. Flipping the classroom was a new concept to me. I can honestly say that I am always open for new suggestions on learn but this was not exactly my favorite. I understand that children especially children like myself with ADD have a hard enough time focusing in the classroom all day so to send students home with long task doesn’t seem ideal for me. Also I do not like the idea of watching the videos everyday in class. This idea seems like something that I would not enjoy attempting in my classroom.

The seventh video that I watched was bringing the locker room into the classroom. Although I do not have any intentions on becoming a coach I was a student athlete in high school so I enjoyed watching this clip. I believe that keeping the energy up in my future classroom with physical activity and a positive uplifting attitude is key in any locker room and or classroom.

What about EDM310?

I have been a student at the University of South Alabama for over a year now. I am in the elementary education program and I am currently enrolled in EDM310. EDM310 is honestly something I have only heard horror stories about. So many of my peers have expressed negative feelings towards this class. They have said things like, “this is the class that most people drop” and “This is the hardest and most time consuming class ever.” Among all of the negative comments the only glimpse of hope I did have was the fact that someone told me, “It is best to have a Mac computer for EDM310”.  So heading in for my first day of class I thought to my self, well at least I have a mac. Hearing all of these negative things about EDM310 I walked into the classroom more anxious than ever. My head was spinning and about to explode. I was afraid that this class would do some serious damage to my GPA and that I would not understand how to do any of the projects. To be honest, I do own a mac but I defiantly do not know how to use it. I believe the most difficult thing about this class will be trying to learn how to do the projects for example creating a book trailer.

EDM310 is a class like no other. I have taken many college courses and have only attended EDM310 twice and without a doubt I can already tell this class is in a entire category of its own. EDM310 is the only class that I have taken that involves zero paper. I have not been in any high school or college course that I haven’t had a binder full of notes. Another difference I have just recently learned about is self-evaluation. In EDM310 we the students have the opportunity to grade our own work along with our peers work.  I believe that this class will truly open my eyes to the fact that, every class dose not have to involve paper and pen or a teacher standing at the front of the classroom the entire time. I do not have any further questions about this class just yet but, I do know they will come. But, when I do have a question I know exactly what I will do. Within the first 15 minutes of the very first day of class our professor made it clear he was there to help. The syllabus and webpages for this class are filled with professors and grad students that are all ready to help. So, I believe there is one last difference in EDM310 verses any other course. EDM310 is over flowing with professors and students that want nothing more than to see us succeed and are ready to help in any way they can!

My name is Shelby Jemison. I am 21 years old and I was born in Fairhope Alabama on July 29th 1993.  I have two of the greatest parents in the world and a 16-year-old brother. I have lived in Baldwin County for almost my entire life. I have three precious puppies named Sophie, Bentley, and Sadie. I just recently got engaged this Christmas on December 20th 2014 at Bellingrath Gardens. I love Jesus more than anything he is the reason for it all. Some of my interests include shopping and art. I also have a major interest in animals. I love all types of animals ranging from puppies to reptiles like the Chinese water dragon. Another one of my major interest is organization. Organizing is something that I enjoy doing and also something that I probable could not live without. I am basically obsessed with school supplies. I collect supplies like pens, pencils, markers, crayons, notebooks, folders, and binders. I am an extremely anxious person and also a tad bit OCD. Plus I might be a bit of a hypochondriac. The two things I could not function without are my Bible and my agenda. I try my best to put 110% of my effort into every single thing that I do. In addition to all of the above I love children.

I began my secondary education journey at Troy University. I went to college at Troy for two years. I then transferred to the University of South Alabama and this is my third semester as a jaguar. I am an elementary education major and I love every single thing about it. I feel that teaching is Gods plan for me. Teaching is my passion. There is no greater feeling than to watch children grow and learn. Generally an educator’s work entails creating lesson plans, teaching children, organizing, and recording.  But with each class I have taken in the education program here at USA I have learned that being an educator is so much more than lesson plans and records. Being a teacher is an extremely huge responsibility. You are responsible for helping children become confident and responsible. You are there to help guide student and help them learn to make good decision. The children you teach are the future. I could not picture myself doing anything else but teaching. I hope that I will be blessed with the job that gives me the opportunity to make a difference in children’s life each and everyday.
